European Union rules and regulations for controlling vehicular emissions in almost all types of vehicles excluding ships and air o planes are called European Emission Standards. These have different stages namely Euro 1, Euro 2 etc. Now a days we encounter every new vehicle on the road with a green label on its back shouting out that it has the Euro 2 technology. What is this technology all about? Does it have anything to do with the engine?? Definitely no!!
Actually Euro 2 technology is the set of emission standards devised by the European Union back in 1996-97 in order to control the vehicular emissions. According to these standards:
  • Euro 2 emission limits (petrol):
  • CO - 2.2 g/km
  • HC+ NOx - 0.5 g/km
  • PM (Particulate matter) - no limit
  • Euro 2 emission limits (diesel):
  • CO - 1.0 g/km
  • HC+ NOx - 0.7 g/km
  • PM (Particulate matter) - 0.08 g/kg                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     In addition to the Euro 2 there are Euro 3, 4, 5, 6 also available. Each of these rules limit the vehicular emission to a lower level to decrease the pollution. The main focus is on Catalytic converter rather than the engine in this regard. The efficiency of the catalytic converter makes a vehicle eligible to qualify to a particular Euro stage. So if you are buying a new vehicle with the assumption that Euro 2 technology will give you a better engine and mileage or speed or something like that, you are mistaken.
