Names of Elements and their meanings!Part 1



Hello!In today's article we have enlisted the elements of the periodic table and the origin of their names. In order to keep the charm alive, the topic has been divided into several parts with each part containing the origin of names of 10 or more elements.     1. Hydrogen (Water Former)
    2. Helium  (From Greek word helios meaning Sun.Actually it was discovered on the basis of spectral lines coming from Sun)
    3. Lithium (From Greek word Lithios. It is almost always present in small quantities in the igneous rocks,that is why named so)
    4. Beryllium (From Beryl meaning Sweet.Early Scientists used to taste the compounds of metal to confirm the presence of this metal.
    5. Boron (From Arabic Word Buraq and Persian Word Burah. No particular reason for the origin of this name but a speculation is that the Borax reservoirs in the Arab may have lead to this name)
    6. Carbon (From Latin Word Carbo meaning Charcoal, called so because it is the constituent of Charcoal)
    7. Nitrogen (From Latin word Nitrium meaning nitre forming:nitre is a common name for KNO3).
    8. Oxygen (From Greek Words oxy=acid gene=forming: It was called so because earlier scientists believed that presence of oxygen in a compound led to acidic properties e.g. CO2)
    9. Fluorine (From Latin word Fluere=Flow or Flux: named after the use of its compound fluorospar as a flux by Agricola)
    10. Neon (From Greek Word Neon=New. The reason behind this name is that Ramsey discovered it shortly after Krypton and he called it a new gas in the series of his discoveries)
